FAMILY CENTERED CARE NOW OFFERED AT BDHS

NOVEMBER 19, 2012
Bozeman Deaconess Maternal-Newborn Services is being reborn, with a new focus on caring for new families. Starting this month, patients in the Bozeman Deaconess Maternal-Newborn will receive “family centered care” from one designated nurse per shift who cares for both mother and baby during their entire hospital stay.

Previously, one nurse was assigned to the new mother and a different nurse cared for the newborn, often in the Nursery. “Now moms and babies stay together and are nurtured by the same nurse,” said Susan Connell, manager of Bozeman Deaconess Maternal-Newborn Services. “If the mom wants to, she can keep her baby in her room the whole time she’s here. We encourage that.”

The latest newborn nursing standard, which has been endorsed as the ideal care model by the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetrics and Neonatal Nurses, has been adopted by more than 2,200 hospitals nationwide.

The improved care program gives new mothers more time with their infants, so they learn their babies’ feeding cues and other normal newborn behavior. “That empowers a better transition home,” said Beckie Walter, BSN, RN, CLC. “Moms are more confident, and get more practice. They accomplish total newborn care with the help of staff.”

Not only does the program provide more individualized nurse-to-patient attention, Connell said, it also means fewer interruptions, so mom can rest when baby does. Nurses are assigned to care for just two or three families at a time. Babies who need special medical attention will continue to be assigned to a neonatal specialist nurse.
