BOZEMAN DEACONESS PEDIATRICS NOMINATED FOR THE AAP 2013 BEST SMALL CHAPTER AWARD

The Montana Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatricians (AAP) works hard to help keep Montana kids healthy and safe. Their efforts recently have been recognized with a nomination for the AAP 2013 Best Small Chapter Award.

“This is really exciting,” said Pepper Henyon, MD, of Bozeman Deaconess Pediatrics who recently was elected vice president of Montana AAP. “For many years this chapter was not really active, but now we are implementing lots of programming to improve health for children in our state.”

Montana AAP’s largest project last year was a grant-funded one-day immunization conference, in which pediatric physicians, nurses and public health providers from across the state learned new strategies to promote childhood immunizations, including how to better speak with parents about the subject. The Chapter also sponsored champions who returned to their communities to educate other healthcare providers on these strategies, and the urgent need to increase kids’ vaccination rates across the state.

Dr. Henyon and her colleagues now are leading the state Chapter into new ventures, with four new committees dedicated to:
working with the Legislature on childhood healthcare issues
improving statewide childhood immunization rates
preventing child abuse , with a symposium on this issue in April
assisting pediatric practices to become Medical Homes

With only about 100 pediatricians in the state, Montana AAP is one of the smallest chapters, Dr. Henyon said. She is proud all of her colleagues at Bozeman Deaconess Pediatrics are members.

“Getting this nomination is really a huge deal, and shows we’ve accomplished so much,” she said. “It’s exciting we can pull it all together, improve communications and get people together working on projects that will improve the health of children across the state.”
The winner of the Best Small Chapter Award will be announced in Chicago in March at the AAP Annual Leadership Forum.
