THE WEIGHT OF THE NATION

JANUARY 13, 2014
In the United States, 68 percent of adults age 20 and older are overweight or obese, while 31.7% of the nation’s children and adolescents ages two to 19 are overweight or obese. Obesity contributes to five of the 10 leading causes of death in America, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, many cancers and stroke. Between 1987 and 2010, the number of Americans diagnosed with diabetes nearly tripled to 20.9 million.

As part of its effort to help combat the obesity epidemic in our community, Bozeman Deaconess Health Services is hosting a screening of the HBO documentary, THE WEIGHT OF THE NATION. Three years in the making, THE WEIGHT OF THE NATION examines the facts and myths of this urgent public health issue, showing how obesity affects the health of the nation and the health care system. The film features case studies and interviews with leading experts, individuals and families struggling with obesity. The series also highlights how individuals, worksites, and communities are making positive changes. Dietitians from Bozeman Deaconess Nutrition Specialists will be presenting two parts of “The Weight of The Nation” campaign this month.

• Part 1, “Consequences,” examines the scope of the obesity epidemic and explores the serious health consequences of being overweight or obese and will be shown on Monday, January 13.

• Part 2, “Choices,” offers viewers the skinny on fat, revealing what science has shown about how to lose weight, maintain weight loss and prevent weight gain and will be screened on Monday, January 27.

Both films will begin at 6:00 pm in the Bitterroot Room of Bozeman Deaconess Conference Center.

THE WEIGHT OF THE NATION is a presentation of HBO and the Institute of Medicine, in association
with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health, and in
partnership with the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation and Kaiser Permanente.

These film showings are free and open to the public. For more information, call 406-414-1644.

Medical Oncology

OFFERING ACCESS TO THE LATEST CLINICAL STUDIES.

Researchers are finding better ways to treat cancer with new drugs, new approaches to radiation and surgery, and new methods like vaccine and gene therapy. As a network member of the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, patients have increased access to these clinical studies. These studies are used to prove the safety and effectiveness of new treatments -- if a new treatment approach is proven to work, those enrolled in the clinical trial are among the first to benefit.
