BOZEMAN DEACONESS CELEBRATES WOMEN

OCTOBER 7, 2013
Busy women often don’t take the time to take care of themselves. To change that, Bozeman Deaconess Women’s Center is encouraging women to take the morning or afternoon of Saturday, October 12, and participate in a new women’s wellness day, All About Women, in the BDHS conference rooms.

“Our goal is to provide women with a day of wellness while educating them about a variety of services available at the Women’s Center,” said Janice Garcia, ATC, PTA, WCC, of Bozeman Deaconess Rehabilitation Services. “We’re doing this as part of recognizing October as Physical Therapy Month and to promote breast health during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.”

Five 40-minute classes led by BDHS providers will be offered each session. A yoga class will offered detailed instruction on alignment and breath control to increase flexibility and enhance relaxation. Pelvic and breast health will cover improving pelvic floor muscles and correctly performing self-breast exams. Be introduced to neuroplasticity and experience the benefits of scent, sound, guided relaxation and touch, including a mini-massage of feet, hands or shoulders.

Women also will learn what they should know about proper skin care, and procedures available to achieve the care their skin needs. Finally, the latest research-based nutrition information will be presented, including gluten-free living, vegetarian eating, top antioxidants and sports nutrition for active women.

The morning session runs 8:00 am–12:30 pm, and the afternoon session takes place 11:45 am–4:15 pm. The cost is $40, which includes all classes, a scented eye pillow, yoga mat and carrier, and lunch.

Registration forms are available at www.bozemandeaconess.org/events. Click on the event, print out the form and return the completed form with payment to BDHS Health Information Center, 915 Highland Blvd., Bozeman, MT, 59715. Call 414-1644 for more information.

PULMONARY EXERCISE TESTING

Measuring the body’s response to exercise unveils the fingerprint of an individual’s underlying health and disease. From these data, one can gain insight into a subject’s inherent athleticism, state of training, potential rehabilitation, and/or severity of heart, lung, or muscle disease. In other words, making accurate measurements and being able to interpret them are relevant to athletes, 'weekend warriors' and patients.

Using computerized cardiopulmonary exercise system that makes precise, instantaneous measurements during exercise, the physician can make breath-by-breath measurements of metabolic responses, for example, oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, minute ventilation, ventilatory pattern, ventilatory efficiency, anaerobic or ventilatory threshold while at the same time make measurements of cardiac response (EKG, blood pressure, etc.) identical to the stress test administered by cardiologists.

This testing looks at the whole chain of events of oxygen delivery to the muscle.
