OCTOBER 23, 2013
Bozeman Deaconess Health Services today announced that it has received the Healthgrades Pulmonary Care Excellence Award for 2014 and has been recognized by Healthgrades for clinical excellence in Orthopedic, Pulmonary and Gastrointestinal Care. Bozeman Deaconess is currently the only hospital in Montana to receive the2013 Healthgrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award.

Bozeman Deaconess Health Services was ranked among the top 15% in the nation for Outstanding Patient Experience in 2013 and ranked among the top 5% in the nation for Overall Pulmonary Services for 2014. BDHS was named a Five-Star recipient for Total Knee Replacement for three years in a row (2012-2014), and was recognized for the first time as a Five-Star recipient for treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Pneumonia and GI Bleed for 2014.

“Receiving these awards from Healthgrades, both those we’ve had the honor of earning in previous years and those we achieved for the first time this year, illustrates our system-wide dedication to clinical quality and patient care,” said Kevin Pitzer, President and CEO of Bozeman Deaconess Health Services. “They recognize the continuous commitment of all our employees and medical staff and validate our commitment be a “high reliability” health care system which is reflected by our investments in processes and new technology, and our leadership commitment.”

Healthgrades, the leading online resource that helps consumers search, compare and connect with physicians and hospitals, announced this achievement in American Hospital Quality Outcomes 2014: Healthgrades Report to the Nation, which evaluates hospital performance at over 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 31 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions.

A Five-Star rating indicates that Bozeman Deaconess Health Services’ clinical outcomes are better than expected when treating the condition or conducting the procedure being evaluated. BDHS not only performs at a Five-Star level, it outperforms other hospitals in the nation in Pulmonary Care, and as a result has been recognized with the 2014 Healthgrades Pulmonary Care Award.

“As American policy-makers focus more intently on ways to lower healthcare costs and improve quality, patients are being asked to assume more responsibility for their healthcare decisions – from selection of their health plan to the associated network of physicians and hospitals,” said Evan Marks, EVP, Strategy and Informatics at Healthgrades. “Since all hospitals do not perform equally in all procedures, patients can have confidence that by selecting a physician associated with a hospital that has achieved recognition by Healthgrades, they can potentially improve outcomes and reduce costs.”

PULMONARY EXERCISE TESTING

Measuring the body’s response to exercise unveils the fingerprint of an individual’s underlying health and disease. From these data, one can gain insight into a subject’s inherent athleticism, state of training, potential rehabilitation, and/or severity of heart, lung, or muscle disease. In other words, making accurate measurements and being able to interpret them are relevant to athletes, 'weekend warriors' and patients.

Using computerized cardiopulmonary exercise system that makes precise, instantaneous measurements during exercise, the physician can make breath-by-breath measurements of metabolic responses, for example, oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, minute ventilation, ventilatory pattern, ventilatory efficiency, anaerobic or ventilatory threshold while at the same time make measurements of cardiac response (EKG, blood pressure, etc.) identical to the stress test administered by cardiologists.

This testing looks at the whole chain of events of oxygen delivery to the muscle.
