MONTANA CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS AWARD

MARCH 25, 2014
The Montana Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recently was selected as the winner of the AAP 2014 Outstanding Small Chapter Award at the annual meeting in Chicago.

“This is a really great accomplishment for our chapter,” said vice president of MT AAP Pepper Henyon, MD, of Bozeman Deaconess Pediatrics. “This national recognition validates the great work we are doing around the state. Over the last few years the chapter has made great strides in working with the approximately 100 pediatricians across the state to develop programs which help them deliver excellent care to their patients as well as improve the health of children in Montana.”

The MT APP’s efforts have focused on improving the numbers of children who are vaccinated, providing education to health care providers on child abuse, developing regional child abuse response teams across the state and advocating at the state legislature for laws that improve the health and safety for Montana children.

The nomination was based on the chapter’s excellence in:
• Strategic Priorities
• Activities (influencing education and participation of other health related organizations in advocacy efforts for children)
• Finances
• Membership Retention & Recruitment
• Governance & Development of chapter leadership

PULMONARY EXERCISE TESTING

Measuring the body’s response to exercise unveils the fingerprint of an individual’s underlying health and disease. From these data, one can gain insight into a subject’s inherent athleticism, state of training, potential rehabilitation, and/or severity of heart, lung, or muscle disease. In other words, making accurate measurements and being able to interpret them are relevant to athletes, 'weekend warriors' and patients.

Using computerized cardiopulmonary exercise system that makes precise, instantaneous measurements during exercise, the physician can make breath-by-breath measurements of metabolic responses, for example, oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, minute ventilation, ventilatory pattern, ventilatory efficiency, anaerobic or ventilatory threshold while at the same time make measurements of cardiac response (EKG, blood pressure, etc.) identical to the stress test administered by cardiologists.

This testing looks at the whole chain of events of oxygen delivery to the muscle.
