BOZEMAN DEACONESS TURNS BLUE IN APRIL FOR AUTISM AWARENESS

MARCH 29, 2013
Nearly one child in 90 in the United States has been identified with an autism spectrum disorder according to estimates from the Center for Disease Control’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network. Autism spectrum disorder affects more than two million people in this country and is almost five times more common among boys than girls.

Many of those with autism spectrum disorder have not been diagnosed due to the complex nature of these brain development disorders. To raise awareness of the condition, Bozeman Deaconess Health Services is promoting World Autism Awareness Day on April 2. Bozeman Deaconess Hospital will “shine a light on autism” by going blue for the month of April, and Bozeman Deaconess is encouraging everyone to “Wear Blue to Work” on April 2.

People with autism spectrum disorder often are affected by flashing lights, sudden movements and overly loud sounds, making it uncomfortable to participate in many routine activities, such as attending the cinema. BDHS is helping there as well, by offering a free sensory-friendly film on April 27. “The Incredibles” will be shown with volume and lights at appropriate levels in the Wheatgrass Room at 1:00 pm. All are welcome.
